20120430 - EVENING - VICTAS: WHO'S TALKING ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

We all understand the power of referrals, but the main thing that drives referrals is Word of Mouth. Often confused with social media, it is the most effective yet least understood form of marketing in the market place.

Not only do we personally make use of this form of marketing for our own decision making on a daily basis, but our businesses have come to rely on work generated through Word of Mouth.

Do you know:
- Why traditional methods of Marketing are no longer successful and may turn potential clients away?
- How does the market place – your potential clients – prefer to be marketed to?
- How Apple used WOMM to drive its success?
- How these principles can be transferred to drive your business?

20120326 - EVENING - VICTAS: INSPIRING YOUR CLIENTS' WORKPLACE CULTURE

When Natalie Ashdown was growing up in the corporate world, all she wanted to be was a McKinsey Consultant! Then she discovered coaching as a way of pursuing her passion: transforming workplace culture and bringing out the best in individuals and teams.

As leaders, to truly make a sustainable impact on the organisations and people that we work with, we need to move beyond the straight consulting framework and towards a coaching culture.

Natalie holds a Bachelor of Business in Marketing from RMIT and a Masters of Business Administration from The University of Melbourne (2001). She holds the Diploma of Workplace and Business Coaching, Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training, Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Master Coaching and Master of Ericksonian Hypnosis, she is a Certified Story Coach with the ICF, thus qualifying her as a fully accredited Master Coach and Facilitator.

NSW: INGREDIENTS OF PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE - IS YOUR RECIPE THE "RIGHT" ONE FOR YOU AND YOUR CLIENTS?

As a Management Consultant, there is an expectation of professional performance. But what does this mean in practice, to both the consulting profession, and to the client marketplace? What are the ingredients?
WHEN MANAGEMENT DECISIONS GET IN THE WAY OF PRODUCTIVE WORKPLACES

It constantly amazes me, despite all we know about human behaviour, that managers can still get the implementation of change completely wrong. Psychology may not be a completely exact science and there is much we dont know yet but it is better than whim. Moreover, there are some things for which we have ample evidence. For the purposes of this article, these are that employees are more fully engaged in their work and more productive if: their job satisfaction is high; the culture is essentially democratic; they are valued; intrinsic reward is the norm; they feel they have autonomy in their work; relationships are fulfilling; the work has meaning and purpose; and there is optimum variety in the work.

It has also been shown that as little as a fifth of all employees in developing countries are fully engaged at work and, hence, fully productive. More importantly, workplaces are potentially psychologically unhealthy, if not managed well, and this has considerable impact on those who work there. There are dire consequences indeed of managers not being aware of what is required to develop and maintain a positive workplace culture. And it is the management of an organisation that is fully responsible for the culture.

INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONSULTING: LOOKING FOR WORK & TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS

While it is certainly possible for individual consultants to win work with international development agencies such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, AusAID and NZAID, this is especially difficult without having already established a track record in the field. Usually, an easier route is to find work through one of the major Australia-based international development consulting companies. These firms are sometimes described fairly or unfairly as the body shops, which refers to the way in which they assemble and contract teams of people to bid for and, if successful, implement international development projects.

TAXING TIMES AHEAD: WILL CARBON BECOME THE MONEY TREE?

The domestic economy is under continuing pressures as the current profit reporting period will evidence in the erratic nature of business results. The cautious outlook adopted by some economic commentators comes as no surprise to a public currently bearing the brunt of rising costs. The concerns over immigration, rising costs and additional taxes are adding further negatives to the political mix as reflected in the polls.

Already this year there has been debate on the slowness in spending the Queensland Premiers Flood Appeal, the federal governments Flood Levy and now the Carbon tax all of which has ignited adverse public reaction. The underlying irritation of increased taxing at a time when costs are rising along with the warnings of further increases over the coming year does not give comfort to a fragile government. Presently we have the Carbon Tax debate going on with the doubts about the mechanism by which it will be delivered. Some of the elements remain vague but the recently released details of the tax rates can now be better understood. So first perhaps a few words on the Carbon Tax.

PITCHING YOUR CONSULTING SERVICES

Have you ever landed a whale? a really big consulting client? Are you up for the high stakes of pitching a large consulting contract worth a million dollars or more? Most professionals I know are great at consulting but they don't get enough practice at pitching and landing clients.

What makes a great rainmaker and what constitutes a great pitch? I've seen consultants email a written proposal at a client like a hand grenade in the hope of landing work, then gingerly approaching a few weeks later when they get no response. I have a new rule for proposals now - I never ever send a proposal by email or mail. I'll always take a full and proper brief and deliver the proposal in person. If it's not worth visiting to deliver the proposal its not worth doing the work! This rule is based on Alan Weiss philosophy of only writing up proposals as agreements, not as client propositions. Hope is NOT a business strategy!

TWITTER FOR CONSULTANTS

Amidst all the hype about social media, its difficult to know what is useful from a consultants point of view. Like any new technology, some have embraced it wholeheartedly, while others have been more tentative, and some refuse point blank to go near it. As with any change, a fear of the unknown can be a barrier to making the most of a new way of doing things.

The three major social media platforms relevant to most businesses are Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. People of all generations are embracing Facebook for personal or business uses, while LinkedIn has a more professional focus. Where does twitter fit and how can we, as consultants, use it to our advantage?

VIC: FINDING THE FLIPSIDE

FINDING THE FLIPSIDE

Have you ever:

- Thought you understood your field of endeavour, only to find that there is more to learn?
- Realised that the message you thought you were conveying was not the same message that was being received?
- Been able to say that you really understand organisational and personal change?

Our Speaker

As a consultant, trainer and facilitator, Karen spent much of her working life advising large organisations about managing change or helping them to introduce change. She been lucky enough to work with lots of organisations in many different countries including the UK, USA, Singapore, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

She is also no stranger to change herself, to life's twists and turns, glorious views and darker tunnels. She has had plenty of chances to both taste the sweetness and roll with the punches and in many ways it's been a good preparation - a kind of training - for what was to come. Until recently, she didn't really think much about how she coped with change. Whatever turned up - small, large, upsetting or energising - she generally seemed to get through, you might call her 'resilient' or maybe 'seasoned' or perhaps just plain stubborn. Until recently, she really thought she had looked change in the eyes and understood the nature of its gaze. But that was before 'Black Saturday' - that was before the most deadly bushfires in Australia's history.

On February 7th 2009 she found herself in a life threatening situation as she tried to protect myself, her animals and her property during the terrible Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, Australia which destroyed thousands of homes and killed 173 people. In the end, she was lucky to get out alive and was left with the clothes she was standing up in, the contents of her handbag, one dog and, somewhat miraculously, her 2 horses. As changes go, this was a big one and it reduced her carefully constructed life to rubble in the space of one afternoon.

As part of her journey since that day, she has had cause the think carefully about the nature of change, of its place in our lives and how we choose to handle what happens to us. She has written a book which describes how it feels to live through a change of this kind and how she chose to approach the various challenges which presented themselves. she also speak about her experiences and what she has learnt on the road out to a new life. But most of all, she has changed her perspective on change itself and I'm aiming to use her experiences to help others.

Karen holds a Master of Science in Computer Integrated Manufacturing from Cranfield University and a Bachelor of Science in Computational Linguistics & Modern Languages from The University of Manchester. Before founding Direction Finder, Karen was Prinicpal Consultant Strategy & Operations and Project Management Capability Manager Asia Pacific at Price Watherhouse Coopers.

Karen is the author of The Flipside of Misfortune: A journey through change in challenging times, which is a personal story of surviving and thriving after the Black Saturday Bushfires in 2009.

Date

Monday, 22nd August 2011
From 6:00 pm - to 8:00 pm (Speaker at 6:30 pm)

Venue

RACV Club
Level 2, 501 Bourke Street
Parking Available

ECONOMIC UPDATE 2010/2011 - COMMENTARY ON CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE (AUSTRALIA) | By Colin Cloverdale

I can’t remember a time when the world’s sovereign debt was in such a mess. The EU is in disarray and the present situation has led to rumours that it could break up. Especially now that Greece, Ireland, Spain & Portugal are in trouble and it is also speculated that Ireland or Greece will default (again).
